Why do people think that HBCU's are racists. I am going attempt to clear it up. HBCU's are exactly what they are Historically Black Colleges and Universities, these are the schools that were opened years ago so that black people could recieve educations when no other institutions would allow them in their schools. These schools were full of black people and that is why they are historically black. HBCU's do not only accept black people. If you ever attended one like me (HOWARD!!!!!) you would know that they are always looking to become more diverse. The kid next door to me is Asian and we have other non-black people that attend here. Because some people see the world black in the title of Historically Black Colleges and Universities they automatically believe that the schools are only for blacks which is untrue. What do you think of the matter?
Do people understand the reason behind HBCU's, Historically Black Colleges and Universities?
The only people who don't know that are people who are ignorant about history. Unfortunately, there are far too many of them.
Next time someone tells you that historically black colleges and universities are racist -- ask them if they also think that historically white universities -- like Harvard, Princeton, University of Notre Dame and University of Alabama are also racist.
Perhaps the best way to get away from this stigma is for these universities to stop referring to themselves as they used to be.
Reply:I go to Xavier University of Louisiana and I'm a white North Dakota farm girl. And I love it. And it's "historically" Black, not always and forever Black.
Reply:I wish I would have attended a black university.
Frankly, I got tired of hearing myself in classes. I don't even care if I flunk. I've already flunked two classes and everything last semester bores me. I'm 40 years old. I've been exposed to many ideas, I've read books, I want to be challenged.
I've been told I can't drop classes.
Maybe college is not for me. I'd rather have a challenging black school than an easy white school! Many black schools are supposed to be harder. I wish I'd tried that!
