Why are people so rude/cold/unsympathetic to people in customer service/public servants?

I work in customer service and I've noticed that no matter how consistently nice you are, no matter how big you smile, no matter how friendly you sound, the vast majority of people I encounter are just plain rude. I ask people how they are and they ignore me, like I didn't just ask them a question. I really just wanna say "Okay, I guess you have no feeling, you must not emote whatsoever." Or, even better, is when I ask them how they are and they start rattling off their phone number for me to enter into the system or tell me what item they need. I guess I'm just unaware that nouns and numbers had replaced adjectives. And then, for some reason, people can never HAND me money/cards/items/etc. They must throw it on my counter because apparently it takes too much effort to go that extra inch and hand it to me. Do people feel like they can just walk all over people in customer service because it's my job to deal with assholes like them? Does it really kill people to just be nice?

It's not you. I used to work in retail, too, and got that all the time. I've figured out that the problem with people is called displacement. It's a psychological defense mechanism where you take your hostility towards something out on another person or thing. And because as a customer service rep, you can't really retaliate, because it's your job to be nice to them, it makes you a prime target. I know this doesn't help much, but try to pity them.Their life must really suck if they can't even be nice to a total stranger.

Reply:Some people might be having a bad day, or have no manners.

I always try my best to be nice to everyone, but sometimes something or someone gets me in a bad mood, so I might not be able to respond in a way that's not rude so I just don't respond, but I'm not all rude either.

So, I'm just guessing that people have their bad days, or are in a bad mood or in a rush. But, there are some people that have no manners and are just plain rude for no reason.
Reply:I completely understand! I have been in retail for over 11 years and people are terrible sometimes! The ones that kill me are people that feel the need to tell you about each and every prejudice they have. I had a man a couple weeks ago complaining about gay people to me. I DON'T CARE how he feels about gays yet, he felt the need to tell me! Or they sometimes complain about certain races of people that are also there shopping, they assume EVERYONE doesn't like the people they don't like. I speak to everyone and some people totally ignore me or some people will almost run you down with their cart and don't have enough manners to say excuse me. And maybe, just maybe they could get off the phone to check out instead of talking loudly and not hearing a thing we say! They act like we are the lowest people on earth yet we are suppose to be nice to everyone!!! Thanks for letting me vent!
Reply:Because, you being nice and kind is a rarity and people usually go by what so called "service" they have received in the past.
Reply:By the time they call you they have a problem. And very likely angry. Nothing you can do but be nice to them, who knows it might turn them around.
