Why do people mix up cultures?!?

Why do ppl assume that people from Pakistan n Indian r the same--they're ll adressed as being Indian! Just like all orientals r called chinese by som people--it makes them mad when someone does that, well it's the same in this matter for some people! Or like I kno some people that refer to all blacks as Africans(eventhought they're not!)--most of them are born here in the US! Y do people do this?(like put various cultures all into one group just because of their looks!) If u think that it's k for people to say such things, why does it sound weird if u say all white people that are born here r British? N do u think it's k for people 2 do so?!

Why do people mix up cultures?!?
1. because people are not knowledgeable enough about cultural diversity

2. because it's impossible to keep up with that is now politically correct to call someone. I mean, do we call someone Black or African American, or if we go off the music videos on American Black Entertainment Television (BET) we might falsely assume it's ok to say ****er again since we see Black or Af. Am's calling each other that.

3. It's a mental heuristic - there is simply too much to stimulus to deal with cognitively to really separate and identify uniquenesses on the spot, it's a human mental weakness perhaps but it's just how the brain functions.

4. Out-group bias: it's easier to identify differences in people in the group in which you belong, and more likely that you'll recognize similarities between persons belonging to the out-group.

5. Lack of regard - perhaps a person's job was just outsourced to a foreign country and they're not all too happy with that country and their citizens or persons from such heritage as they still represent and identify with such nationality. Not the fault of the individual, but there is always a scapegoat for all scenarios.
Reply:Mostly it's ignorance. Sometimes that ignorance is especially willful.

And while we're on this subject, you should know that "Oriental" should be used only as an adjective referring to things or ideas, such as Oriental rugs or Oriental studies, but never people. Refer to East Asians as East Asians.
Reply:Good point...bad grammar/spelling

I'm not sure if one makes up for the other.
Reply:Welcome to the notion that some people are very naive, and clueless in what they say.
