Why do some people try to say Irish people are not white?

It's just ridiculous! I am part Irish (about a little over 25 percent) and when I told someone this, they said "oh, a white person who claims she's Irish"?!! WTH??!! Irish people are literally some of the whitest people on the planet. Yes, I know they were oppressed by the English and have been dubbed "the Black people of Europe" because they were mistreated and discriminated like the African-Americans here were, but that doesn't deny the fact that they're white! So why do some people say this? Also why do some people say Italian people are not white? Although this is a little more believable because they can be darker than most average white people, whereas Irish people are usually more fair.

Why do some people try to say Irish people are not white?
ignorance and prejudice seem to go together.
Reply:Of course they are white! ALL Europeans, barring the few who may be mixed with sub-Saharan African or East Asian are white. What's up with these stugots who think Italians aren't white? Even the darkest Sicilian is Caucasian. Some people are so consumed by self-hate. Misery loves company! Report It

Reply:there is a claim some blacks lived there. I suspect they did not last there.

Anyway, I'm part Irish and nothing indicate I have african decent. Not that is bad, just is not me.
Reply:not all Italian are white some are from middle eastern decent. Well, I've got a lot of different types of European in me my great gran mothers were from Italy, Spain, Ireland. But my great great ..... was from England. Then to top it off the I've got Native American in me. Ya, pale skin with dark straight hair. highest check bones with a Native American face shape. Don't worry what other people think. You can't make everyone happy.

No you're not black. It's just a mean joke!
Reply:Maybe they meant it sarcastically...most white people ARE Irish. The majority of caucasians in America are Irish and/or German. I'm both.

Technically I'm biracial - Have Apahe/Iroquois and possibly African/Middle-Eastern, but race doesn't matter. What matters is that you embrace your cultures :-)
Reply:I don't know...why does it matter? People are way too hung up on "race".
Reply:PEOPLE are always talking crap. Don't even bother. I am latin and people think I am "white" because of my skin color. I know I am mix of everything (european, asian, indian, black etc), I don't really care what people think.

JUST BE YOU!
Reply:I'm italian, am I white or not? Who c-a-r-e-s?

Why do people still have to put a target on you, saying what you are, what color you are??

There's a lot of ignorant people around.

If I am white and stupid or sick, would this be more positive than being black sane and intelligent???

Color means nothing, these things get me mad.

I lived in the US as a kid and I remember Irish people I knew as with pale complection and red hair.

"La lor cieca vita e` tanto bassa, che invidiosi son d'ogni altra sorte. Fama di loro esser non lassa; misericordia e giustizia li sdegna. Non ti curar di lor, ma guarda e passa.

Translation/ Their pointless life is so low that all other lots they envy. Fame of them the world hath none; Mercy and Justice scorn them both. Ignore them, look ahead and pass them by". (Dante Alighieri, Inferno, Canto III)
Reply:I'm sorry to state this but, although they were commonly discriminated against like black people, in truth, their discrimination will never measure up to what black people went through and the period of time they faced. Black people's struggles were nearly 400 years.

Imagine having your family and culture stripped from you. Imagine being raped by your slave master in front of your helpless husband, as a means to degrade him and yourself. Imagine being denied the right to even learn how to read or write?

Or how about being considered 3/5 of a human being by law just because of the color of your skin? So when I read that they are dubbed "the Black people of Europe", I have to kind of disagree. I am not in favor of their oppression or what they have faced. But their experiences do not match up to the Black experience in America.
Reply:"Anglo-Saxon" - English speakers with an ancestral heritage from England

But I wasn't from England...there are lots of whites not from England.
Reply:here is why!
